Sanjoy to Spin at Canada World Cup Opening in Toronto
Bangladeshi-American DJ and music producer Sanjoy is set to perform at the Fifa World Cup 2026 opening ceremony programme in Toronto, adding a South Asian touch to football’s biggest stage.

Fifa confirmed on Friday that the expanded 2026 World Cup will feature separate opening ceremonies across the three host nations Mexico, Canada and the United States as the tournament kicks off on 11 June in Mexico City.

Sanjoy will take the stage on 12 June in Toronto ahead of Canada’s opening group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The performance is expected to be one of the major highlights of Canada’s World Cup celebrations, bringing together music, culture and football fans from around the world.

From producing tracks in his bedroom to performing at one of the world’s largest sporting events, Sanjoy described the moment as deeply emotional and historic. In a social media post, he said he feels honoured to represent his journey and culture on such a global platform.

The announcement has already sparked excitement among fans, especially within the South Asian community, with many celebrating the recognition of a Bangladeshi-American artist at a global sporting event.

Fifa also revealed that more details about opening ceremony performances and international artists across host cities will be announced in the coming weeks as preparations for the historic tournament continue.

The 2026 Fifa World Cup will be the biggest edition in the competition’s history, featuring 48 teams and matches across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
