US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed out of a major dinner event in Washington, DC on Saturday night after gunshots were fired near the venue, causing fear and confusion among thousands of guests.
The incident happened during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held at a major hotel in the US capital and attended by top government officials, journalists, and public figures.
According to officials, a man armed with a shotgun opened fire near a security checkpoint outside the main hall. A Secret Service agent was struck during the shooting, but the impact hit protective gear and the agent was not seriously injured.
Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere changed instantly when the shots rang out. Conversations stopped, panic spread, and guests began screaming as they rushed to protect themselves. Many dived under tables while others lay flat on the floor.
Within moments, heavily armed Secret Service officers moved in and secured the room. Trump and the First Lady, who had been seated at the main table, were seen ducking before being quickly escorted out by security.
About 2,600 people were attending the event. Witnesses described a scene of chaos, with waiters fleeing and guests struggling to understand what was happening as security teams took control.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspect had been arrested. Early reports suggest the attacker acted alone, but investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the shooting.
Despite the panic, all senior government officials, including the president, vice president, and cabinet members, were confirmed safe.
Shortly after being evacuated, Trump posted on Truth Social, saying the “shooter had been apprehended” and praising the response of law enforcement. He later added that the First Lady, the Vice President, and all Cabinet members were “in perfect condition,” and announced plans to address the nation.
A Secret Service spokesperson said the agency is investigating the shooting, which occurred near a main security screening area at the event entrance.
The dinner was disrupted as law enforcement secured the area, turning what is usually a night of speeches and humour into a tense and frightening experience.
The incident has once again raised concerns about security at high-profile public events. Even with strong protection measures in place, the shooting highlights how quickly such gatherings can turn into scenes of danger, leaving many questioning how such a breach could happen
